Kylian Mbappé was photographed out in Paris wearing a Hublot Big Bang Unico Titanium Diamonds. Estimated price: around $29,000.
It is his second Hublot on this site, after the Big Bang made for Ahmed Seddiqi & Sons that he carried at the World Cup. Mbappé has a long relationship with Hublot, so expect to see the brand on his wrist often.
What it is
The Big Bang is the watch that made Hublot famous: a big, layered case built in sections, a bit like a sandwich, with the six H-shaped screws on the bezel that you can spot from across a room.
This version is made from titanium, partly brushed and partly polished. Titanium is lighter than steel and does not feel heavy on the wrist, which matters on a case this size. The bezel is set with brilliant-cut diamonds, held in place by those six titanium screws.
Tough metal, soft stones
That mix is the whole point of the watch. Matte industrial titanium and a black rubber strap on one side, a ring of diamonds on the other. Most diamond watches try to look delicate. This one looks like a tool that happens to sparkle.
An engine you can see
The dial is skeletonised, meaning large parts of it are cut away so you can see the movement underneath. The movement is the Unico, Hublot’s own chronograph, and it is a flyback: one press of the pusher resets the stopwatch and starts it again.
Look closely and you can see the column wheel through the dial. That is the small part that controls the chronograph’s start, stop and reset. Most brands hide it on the back of the movement. Hublot puts it on show at the front. The numerals and hands are filled with lume, so it still reads clearly at night.
What happens to the value
We said it on his Seddiqi Hublot page and it is still true: most Hublots lose value once they leave the shop, and the secondary market often sells them well below retail.
That is bad news for the first owner and good news for you. If you want this watch, the grey and pre-owned markets are often the cheapest way to get it.
