Victoria Beckham’s Burgundy Satin Outfit in St-Tropez: Get the Look

The original

$132,650

Our version

$117.94

Four pieces credited, $132,650, walking through St-Tropez at sunset. That is the most expensive outfit we have ever put on this site, by a distance.

And $130,000 of it is the handbag. Everything else — the dress, the sunglasses, the sandals — comes to $2,650 between them.

There is one more thing worth saying before the list. Three of the four items are Victoria Beckham. Not an ambassadorship, not a gifted look — it is her own label. She is wearing her own clothes, which is a different situation from every other page on this site.

Deep burgundy satin, sleeveless, high round neck, fitted through the body and ruched at one hip before falling away to the floor.

The ruching is the piece of design you are paying for. It gathers the fabric at one side so the satin folds diagonally across the body, which is why the light runs across it in bands rather than sitting flat. On a plain bias-cut dress you lose that entirely.

Colour first, though. It has to be a true burgundy — deep red-brown — not wine, not maroon, not plum. In the photograph it reads almost black in shadow and bright red where the sun hits it, and that range is what makes the dress look expensive.

Satin rather than matte. The shine is doing half the work.

Burgundy, open toe, on a platform with a high heel. Barely visible under a floor-length dress — you see the toe and a flash of the platform as she walks.

Which makes the colour the only thing that matters. They are the same burgundy as the dress, so the eye reads one continuous column from neck to floor. A black or nude sandal would cut the line at the ankle.

Match the dress as closely as you can. Everything else about the shoe is hidden.

Large, dark, square, with a flat straight top edge that sits level across the brow. Almost no curve at all along the top line.

That flat top is the detail. It makes the frame read as a hard horizontal bar across the face, which against long loose hair and a soft satin dress is the only sharp line in the whole photograph.

Big and dark. A smaller lens changes the balance of the face and loses the effect.

The same position we took on Khloé Kardashian’s Monaco page, and for the same reason. The Kelly is a protected shape. Hermès pursues lookalikes more aggressively than almost any brand in fashion, and a bag built to imitate that silhouette is not a dupe — it is a counterfeit. We are not linking one.

The Elan is the long, flat version of the Kelly, and this one has a feather trim at the corner. At $130,000 it is not really a handbag in the ordinary sense; it is closer to jewellery with a handle.

What we have listed instead is a plain cream envelope clutch. It is not a Kelly and does not pretend to be. What it shares is the job the bag is doing here: a small, pale, hard-edged object carried flat in the hand, against a long dark dress. That contrast is the whole visual function.

We have left the saving figure off this row deliberately. Nineteen dollars against a hundred and thirty thousand is not a comparison, and the craftsmanship, the leather and the decades of waiting-list mythology are not things a clutch replaces.

What it costs

Four pieces, $117.94 against $132,650. That is 99.9 per cent less — a number so large it tells you nothing.

So here is the useful one. Ignore the bag, and the three garments cost $2,650 against $98.95 here. That is 96.3 per cent less, and it is in line with every other page on this site.

The outfit itself is simpler than the total suggests: one colour from neck to floor, in satin, with a pale object in the hand and a dark bar across the eyes. Three of those four decisions are free.
