Jake Paul’s All-Black Outfit in New York: Get the Look

Five pieces credited, $107,715, walking into a building in New York in a black t-shirt and black shorts.

The clothes cost $2,915. The bag and the watch cost $104,800 between them. This is the second most expensive outfit we have ever priced and almost none of it is clothing.

The t-shirt

Black, deliberately oversized, dropped shoulder, with a small line of white text across the chest. Heavy cotton that holds its shape rather than clinging.

At $115 this is a contemporary label price, not a luxury one, so the saving is modest by our standards.

Get the weight right and the rest follows. A thin jersey tee in the same size hangs limp; a heavyweight one holds the boxy shape that makes this work. Look for 220gsm or above.

The slogan is not worth chasing. On this page the shirt is a black rectangle, and the text is barely legible at any distance.

The shorts

Black, cut wide and falling to just below the knee, in a technical nylon rather than cotton.

Re-Nylon is Prada’s recycled nylon — made from reclaimed plastic including ocean waste, and the material Prada has built much of its recent identity on. It is a genuine environmental programme rather than a marketing line, and it is most of what separates these from ordinary black shorts.

Length and width are what you are copying. They need to be wide through the leg and end below the knee. Anything shorter or slimmer reads as sportswear and the proportion against the oversized tee collapses.

The trainers

That $1,500 is a resale price, not a retail one. Worth being clear about, because it changes what the number means.

The Dunk Low is an ordinary Nike shoe that has been in production since 1985. The “Pigeon” is a Nike SB collaboration with Jeff Staple — the 2005 original caused queues and arrests in New York and became one of the most collectable sneakers ever made. Later Pigeon releases inherit that history and trade well above list.

So you are not looking at $1,500 of shoe. You are looking at roughly $120 of shoe and $1,380 of scarcity.

A standard black-and-white Dunk Low is $91 and is a real Nike. What we will not link is a fake Pigeon — the colourway is heavily counterfeited precisely because of the resale value, and a fake is not a dupe. Buy the plain one.

The bag

The third Kelly we have covered, and the position has not changed. We refused a lookalike on Victoria Beckham’s page and we are refusing one here.

The Kelly silhouette is protected and Hermès pursues imitations harder than almost any house in fashion. A bag built to copy that shape is a counterfeit, not a dupe, and we will not send you to one.

Grizzly is Hermès’ doeskin suede — a napped calf leather with a velvety surface, which is why the tan reads soft rather than glossy. At this size it is a travel bag, which is what makes the number so large.

What we have linked instead is a plain tan leather duffle. It is not a Kelly and does not pretend to be. What it shares is the job: a large tan bag carried by hand against an all-black outfit, which is the only reason your eye goes to it in the photograph.

No saving figure on this row. Ninety-nine dollars against sixty-four thousand is not a comparison.

The watch

The Yacht-Master 42 in this price range is a precious-metal reference rather than steel. The 42mm case, the bidirectional bezel with raised numerals, the matte dial — it is Rolex’s dress-sports watch, positioned between the Submariner and the Day-Date.

What it costs

Five pieces, $253.97 against $107,715. That is 99.76 per cent less, and the two accessories make that number meaningless.

The three garments cost $2,915 and we replaced them for $154.98 — 94.7 per cent less, an ordinary result.

But the honest summary of this outfit is simpler than any percentage. Jake Paul is wearing a black t-shirt, black shorts and black trainers. That is roughly a hundred and fifty dollars of clothing in our version and it is genuinely what he looks like. Everything above that number is a handbag and a watch, and neither is something we can help you with.
