Brad Pitt Outfit at the San Sebastián Film Festival: Blue Suede and Purple
The original
$19,440
Our version
$179.21
Seven pieces credited, $19,440, arriving at the San Sebastián International Film Festival. It is Brad Pitt’s second appearance here, after his blue shirt and purple trousers in Paris.
And it is the same idea again. Blue and purple, worn together — this time a blue suede jacket over a purple polo — with grey trousers, yellow trainers, a burgundy bag and a navy cap. Five or six colours that should not work, and do.
One piece dominates the number. The jacket is $9,950 — 51 per cent of the outfit on its own.

Faux suede collared zip jacket, sky blue

Soft blue suede, a shirt collar, a zip front, cut short to the hip. The texture is visible even in the photograph — the nap of the suede catching the light in patches.
The shape is a blouson: a short, zipped jacket that has been worn since the 1950s and belongs to nobody. What the $9,950 buys is the skin — very fine suede in an unusual colour, which is expensive to make and hard to keep clean.
Our alternative is a suede-feel jacket rather than real suede, and it will not age the same way. But at a distance, the colour and the shape are what you see. Pick the lightest blue you can find.

Bright purple, buttoned open at the collar, worn untucked under the jacket.
Piqué is the textured cotton knit most polo shirts are made from; it has been standard since tennis players adopted it in the 1920s. Five hundred dollars, or nine.
A strong, saturated purple — not lilac. It is the colour that makes the blue jacket look deliberate.
The trousers

Slim-cut wool trousers

Same model, but the exact colour is not available. The link goes to it in dark grey.

Mid-grey wool, with a front crease, worn long and loose so they pool over the trainers.
Grey is the one neutral in the outfit, and it is what holds everything else together. Choose a mid-grey with some drape, and let the hem break on the shoe.

Canvas Low Top

Bright yellow low-tops on a white sole.
Re-Nylon is Prada’s line made from regenerated nylon, and it is the reason for the price. The look itself — a plain yellow low-top — is a basic court shoe in a loud colour.
The yellow is the one thing everyone notices in the photograph, and it is what stops a suit-trouser outfit looking formal.
The bag

A deep burgundy suede holdall, carried on one shoulder.
At $6,000 it is the second most expensive piece here, after the jacket. A soft weekender in a dark red or brown gives you the same final colour note.

A navy cap worn backwards and dark aviators. The cap is Hermès — see our Hermès page — and at $540 it is a soft navy cap with a stripe. The aviators are a 1930s pilot’s shape. Neither carries a detail you could identify from across the street.
What it costs
Seven pieces, $179.21 against $19,440. That is 99.1 per cent less.
And the lesson is the same as in Paris. Pitt dresses in colours most people would never put together — blue and purple, then yellow at the feet — and the confidence of the combination is what makes it work, not the labels.
That confidence is free. The $9,950 jacket is optional.
