Sabrina Carpenter’s Trench and Cable Knit Outfit in New York: Get the Look
The original
$9,620
Our version
$116.15
Three pieces credited, $9,620, leaving a restaurant in New York. And more than half of that is the handbag.
Two things are missing from the credit list, and one of them covers her entire legs. The black mini skirt and the black tights are both uncredited, and without them this is a completely different photograph.

Cream white, chunky cable knit, high rolled neck, and a deliberately frayed raw hem that hangs loose at the bottom.
The fraying is the design. It is a finished garment made to look unfinished — the hem is left raw so threads trail down over the skirt. On a plain-hemmed alternative you lose that, and the sweater reads as neat rather than undone.
What is different: wool and cashmere against acrylic. The original will hold its shape and stay soft for years; a cheap knit pills. At this price you are buying the look for a season, not the garment for a decade — worth being clear about.
Oversized and slightly cropped, so the hem sits at the top of the skirt rather than covering it.

Beige cotton twill, worn open and unbelted, hanging loose to mid-thigh with the collar standing up.
The Valentino is embellished — there is detailing on the original you will not find at forty dollars. But in this photograph the coat is doing one job: providing a large beige frame around a white sweater and black legs. The embellishment is barely visible.
Wear it open. Belted, you lose the sweater and the skirt entirely, and the whole outfit collapses into one shape.
Beige rather than stone or grey. It needs to be warm enough to sit against cream without looking dirty.

This one needs a distinction we have not made before on this site.
On the Hermès Kelly and the Louis Vuitton briefcase we refused to link an alternative, because in those cases the protected thing is the object — the Kelly’s silhouette, the LV monogram print. Copy it and you have a counterfeit.
Chanel is different. What Chanel owns is the interlocking CC. Diamond quilting on a bag with a chain strap is a generic style, made and sold legitimately by hundreds of brands, and has been for decades. A plain quilted bag on a chain is not pretending to be a Chanel; it is just a quilted bag.
So we will link one — provided it carries no CC hardware, no double-C clasp, and no Chanel-style logo plate. If a bag has those, it is a fake and we would not touch it.
Hers is the wavy hobo shape rather than the classic flap: softer, slouchier, worn high under the arm on a short chain.

Thirteen dollars, uncredited, and barely visible — a few inches of black between the sweater hem and the top of the leg.
But it is what makes the proportion work. The sweater is long and loose; without a short dark skirt underneath, it either reads as a jumper dress or the whole silhouette goes shapeless.
Short and plain. It is meant to almost disappear.

Seven dollars, and the single biggest block of colour in the whole photograph. Her legs are black from the skirt to the shoe.
This is the item that makes the outfit work in winter. Bare legs with this coat and sweater would look cold and slightly odd in November. Black tights turn the bottom half into one solid dark column, which balances the beige coat above it and lets the mini skirt be as short as it is.
Semi-opaque rather than fully sheer or fully opaque. You want the leg to read as dark but not flat.
What it costs
Five pieces, $116.15 against $9,620. That is 98.8 per cent less.
But the Chanel is $5,500 of that. Strip out the bag and the two credited garments cost $4,120 against $69.98 here.
And the uncredited half cost us $20.18. A skirt and a pair of tights, neither listed anywhere, holding up an outfit priced at nearly ten thousand dollars.
