Zendaya’s White Balloon Skirt Outfit in Paris: Get the Look

The original

$9,270

Our version

$111.96

Four pieces credited, $9,270, arriving at the Louis Vuitton show in Paris. All four are Louis Vuitton.

Zendaya has been a Louis Vuitton house ambassador since 2023. Head-to-toe single brand at that brand’s own show is a contract being honoured, the same as Carlos Alcaraz in Melbourne. Worth knowing before you read the prices.

The outfit itself uses two colours. White from the neck down, and black at the waist and the feet. That is the entire scheme.

The most expensive item and the reason the photograph works. A balloon skirt is gathered at the waist, inflated through the body, then turned back under itself at the hem so the fabric curves inward instead of hanging straight.

That inward curve is the whole trick. It makes the skirt hold a round shape by itself, without a petticoat, and it is why the silhouette reads as sculptural rather than just full.

What is different: hers is asymmetrical — longer on one side, cut away on the other, which is what produces the diagonal sweep as she walks. Most affordable bubble skirts are even all the way round. You lose the movement, but you keep the shape.

Crisp fabric, not soft. A poplin or taffeta holds the balloon; a jersey collapses into a sack.

A white shirt with the collar built up high around the throat, standing rather than folding, with a long placket running down the front. The cuffs are enormous and stiff, flaring out well past the wrist.

It is a normal shirt with two parts inflated: the collar and the cuffs. Everything between them is conventional.

Which is useful, because those are the two parts you should judge an alternative on. A standard collar sitting flat against the neck gives you a completely different, much softer outfit.

Tuck it in properly. The volume has to end sharply at the belt for the skirt to read as separate.

Wide black leather, worn low and slightly loose over the top of the skirt, with a large silver buckle.

This is the most important cheap item on the page. White shirt into white skirt with nothing at the waist is a dress. The black belt is what cuts the outfit in half and creates the shape — it is the only hard horizontal line in the whole photograph.

Wide rather than thin, and worn over the waistband rather than through loops. Sitting it slightly askew, as she has, is deliberate.

Black pointed pumps on a high thin heel. Plain, closed, no hardware.

Against all that white volume the shoe only needs to do one thing: match the belt and disappear. Any detail on the shoe competes with the skirt and loses.

Pointed, black, high. The most ordinary pump you can find is the right one.

What it costs

Four pieces, $111.96 against $9,270. That is 98.8 per cent less.

The skirt accounts for over half the original total, and it is also the piece you can get closest to — a bubble hem is a construction detail, not a luxury material, and it costs thirty dollars.

What the $9,270 buys that our version does not: an asymmetric cut, better poplin, and a collar that will hold its shape after washing. What it does not buy is the idea, which is two colours, one hard line at the waist, and a skirt that holds its own shape.
