Vinicius Jr’s Louis Vuitton and Timberland Outfit at the Madrid Grand Prix: Get the Look

The original

$195,510

Our version

$261.49

Eight pieces credited, $195,510, walking through the paddock at the Madrid Grand Prix. That is the most expensive outfit and the most items we have ever priced on this site.

Two watches account for $190,000 of it. The clothes, including the boots, come to $5,510.

A note on the brand. Vinícius is not a personal Louis Vuitton ambassador — his fashion deal is with Hugo Boss. But Louis Vuitton has an official multiyear partnership with Real Madrid that dresses him and his teammates for travel and events. We cannot say whether this appearance falls under that arrangement, but it explains why so much of what he wears is Louis Vuitton.

The jewellery — the diamond cross, the tennis chains, the bracelets — is not credited, and we have not priced it.

This is the same boot. Not an alternative — an actual Timberland 6-inch in wheat nubuck, currently selling below its list price.

It is also the cheapest credited item on the page by some distance, and the most recognisable. The wheat Timberland has been made since 1973 and is one of the few footwear designs that nobody needs to copy, because the real one is already affordable.

Worth noticing: in an outfit that cost nearly two hundred thousand dollars, the boots are a $220 high-street staple. That is a deliberate choice, and it is the single most useful thing to copy from this photograph.

White, ribbed, sleeveless. Eight hundred and twenty dollars for a vest.

There is no pattern and no visible branding. The fit is close and the rib is fine, and that is all you can see. A multipack of ordinary ribbed cotton tanks gives you exactly this, several times over.

Get the fit right: close to the body, not stretched. White only.

Green and cream check, knotted around the waist by the sleeves rather than worn.

The check pattern is generic — flannel check has been around for well over a century and belongs to nobody. Any Louis Vuitton monogram detail worked into the original is the part we do not copy, and at this distance, tied around his hips, none of it is visible anyway.

Tied at the waist it stops being a shirt and becomes a colour block. Green or olive check against dark brown trousers is what you want.

Dark brown, very wide, falling straight over the boots with extra length pooling at the hem.

The width is the point. Slim cargos give you a completely different silhouette. These need to be genuinely baggy through the whole leg, so they sit over the top of the Timberlands rather than tucking behind them.

Dark green with a large LV buckle. It sits high and visible between the tank and the tied shirt.

This is the one piece where we are careful. The LV monogram print and the interlocking LV buckle are Louis Vuitton’s trademarks, and a belt reproducing either is a counterfeit, not a dupe — the same line we held on Lewis Hamilton’s briefcase.

What we have linked is a plain reversible leather belt with a plain buckle. It gives you the width and the dark band at the waist, and nothing else.

Pale pink, worn backwards.

Seven hundred and fifty dollars, and the only colour in the upper half of the outfit apart from the belt. A plain pink cotton cap does the same job for ten dollars. Wear it backwards; that is half the look.

Two watches, credited at $95,000 each, and a number that needs explaining.

On Drake’s page we priced the same watch at its retail figure. The credit here uses the secondary-market price instead, and the gap between the two is the story. The frosted Royal Oak Mini retails at about $34,400, but Audemars Piguet allocates them so tightly that resale prices sit around $94,000 to $110,000 — close to three times retail. Both numbers are real; they measure different things.

The “silver” and “bronze” in the credits are the white-gold and pink-gold versions. The frosted finish is Carolina Bucci’s hammered technique, driven into the gold with a diamond-tipped tool.

As on every watch page here, we are not linking an alternative. Both buttons go to Audemars Piguet at The Luxury Closet.

What it costs

Eight pieces, $261.49 against $195,510. That is 99.9 per cent less, and with $190,000 of watches in the total the figure tells you nothing.

The six garments and the boots cost $5,510, and we replaced them for $261.49 — 95.3 per cent less, an ordinary result.

And the most useful detail is the one that cost least. The boots are real Timberlands, the same pair anyone can buy. In the most expensive outfit we have ever priced, the footwear is a $220 high-street classic — and it is what holds the whole thing together.
