Travis Kelce Outfit in New York City: AMIRI Shirt, Bottega Slip-Ons and Cartier

The original

$73,740

Our version

$125.35

Five pieces credited, $73,740, out for dinner in New York with Taylor Swift — her side of the evening is here. It is Travis Kelce’s second appearance on this site, after his Givenchy knit in Nashville.

A cream striped bowling shirt, brown trousers, checkerboard slip-ons, gold aviators and a gold watch. $70,000 of the $73,740 is the watch. And the two most noticeable pieces — the shirt and the shoes — both carry a house signature, which shapes what we can honestly link.

Pale yellow-cream with thin dark stripes, a camp collar and a boxy short sleeve.

Look closely and the stripes are not just stripes: the AMIRI name is written in script along them, and again on the collar. That makes it a logo shirt, and a copy that reproduced the script would be a counterfeit. What we link is the same idea without the name — a pale striped short-sleeve shirt, worn open at the neck.

Warm brown, pleated, with a sharp crease and a wide, slightly flared leg that covers most of the shoe. No logo anywhere — this is the easy piece. Pick a mid brown and keep them long.

A black-and-white check on a low slip-on with a white sole.

There are two signatures in this shoe. Bottega Veneta’s check is Intrecciato — strips of leather woven by hand, the house’s famous alternative to a logo — and a woven copy of it would borrow Bottega’s identity. But the shape itself, a checkerboard slip-on, belongs to someone else: Vans, whose Classic Slip-On has been sold since 1977 and whose checkerboard became famous in the early 1980s.

So the honest answer is the original original: a real pair of Vans, printed canvas rather than woven leather, and about one-twentieth of the price. See more on our Bottega Veneta page.

Thin gold frames with dark lenses — the 1930s pilot’s shape that every brand makes. Nothing on them identifies the maker from a metre away.

Square-ish gold case, exposed screws on the bezel, and a dial cut away so you can see the movement inside.

The Santos is one of the first wristwatches ever made: Louis Cartier designed it in 1904 for the aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont, who wanted to read the time without taking a pocket watch out mid-flight. The skeleton version replaces the dial with the movement itself, which is most of the price. As with every watch here, we link no alternative — see Cartier on Ice Spice’s Santos and Sydney Sweeney’s Baignoire.

What it costs

Four pieces, $125.35 against $73,740 — 99.8 per cent less, and the watch makes that figure meaningless.

Without the watch, the clothes came to $3,740 and we replaced them for $125.35 — 96.6 per cent less.

And the shoes are the lesson of this page. The $1,120 Bottega is a luxury version of a $58 Vans — not the other way round. When a designer reworks a classic, the original is often still on sale, and it is usually the better buy.
