Taylor Swift Outfit in New York City: Stella McCartney Striped Halter Dress

Three pieces credited, $4,670, out for dinner in New York with Travis Kelce — his side of the evening is here. It is Taylor Swift’s second appearance here, after her earlier New York look.

A long, bias-cut halter dress in olive with metallic diagonal stripes, a small brown bag and gold sandals. Two of the three pieces are Stella McCartney — and Stella McCartney has never used leather or fur since launching her label in 2001. That turns out to matter for this outfit more than you might expect.

The dress

Olive silk with thin metallic stripes running diagonally, a halter neck on a fine gold chain, and a long skirt that skims the floor with a slit at the side.

The diagonal stripe is the expensive part. It is woven into the fabric at an angle, and the dress is cut on the bias so the stripes wrap around the body — slow, careful work. We could not find that stripe at an honest price, so we have linked what carries the look from across a room: a sleek satin halter maxi with the same long, liquid line. Choose olive, bronze or champagne to catch the light the same way.

The bag

Small and structured, in brown with a reptile-scale texture and a round gold medallion on the side.

Here is the twist: because Stella McCartney does not use leather, the $1,650 Frayme is itself made from a man-made alternative, embossed to look like scales. Our version is a faux-leather bag embossed the same way — so for once, the material really is the same idea at a fraction of the price. The only thing we leave out is the round gold medallion, which is Stella McCartney’s own signature.

The sandals

Metallic gold, with a soft twisted band across the toes and a slim strap at the ankle. Under a floor-length dress you mostly see a flash of gold at each step — which is exactly what to copy: a gold sandal with a twisted or knotted front.

What it costs

Three pieces, $118.97 against $4,670. That is 97.5 per cent less.

And this one is a nice lesson in what a luxury price really pays for. On the bag, it is not the material — Stella’s is no more “real” than ours. It is the design, the finish and the name. The dress is the opposite: there the money buys a woven stripe and a bias cut that no cheap version quite reproduces. Knowing which is which is how you decide where to spend.
