Selena Gomez’s Navy and Brown New York Outfit: Get the Look

Straight up front: this is the hardest look we have tried to recreate, and we did not fully manage it. Three of the four pieces below are substitutions rather than matches. We will tell you exactly what is different and what you lose, because a page that pretends otherwise is worth nothing to you.

Here is why it is difficult. Every piece is specific in a way the high street is not: a tailored military jacket in wool, a mini skirt with a metallic pinstripe woven through it, navy suede knee boots, and patterned hosiery in navy rather than black. Any one of those is findable. All four together, in the right colours, are not.

So read this one as a formula rather than a shopping list. The structure is: a stiff navy jacket cut short and close, a warm brown skirt cut shorter still, a patterned leg, and a tall boot in the same family as the jacket. Two colours, three textures, nothing loose. Get that shape right and the specific pieces matter less than you think.

The tights

Start here, because this is the piece that makes the outfit and it is not on any credit list. Bare legs or plain black opaques under this skirt and you have an ordinary blazer-and-mini combination. The patterned leg is what turns it into something deliberate, and it is the cheapest thing on the page.

What is different: hers are navy, these are black. That matters more than it sounds, because navy-on-navy with the jacket and boots is what keeps the outfit reading as one idea. In black they read as a separate accessory. Worth it anyway — almost every patterned tight on the high street is floral lace, and lace is a completely different register. This one is a clean geometric diamond, which is the right family.

The jacket

What is different: quite a lot. The Jamison is a military jacket — shirt-style point collar, four flap patch pockets, structured shoulder, nipped waist, in heavy wool. This is a notch-lapel blazer. The silhouette is close, the detailing is not.

We searched Amazon three separate ways for a tailored four-pocket military jacket in navy and it does not exist there at any price. What you get is either a soft cotton anorak with a drawstring, which is far too casual, or a business blazer, which is this. Of the two, the blazer is the right call: it holds its shape, it is cut close, and it stops at the hip. Those three things are what the jacket is doing in the photograph.

If you want to get closer, look for a navy blazer with patch pockets rather than welt pockets. It is a small detail that reads from across a room.

The skirt

What is different: no pinstripe. Hers has a fine metallic stripe woven through it that catches the light; this is a plain brown.

We had a choice here and made it deliberately. Amazon has a decent navy pinstripe mini for around $28 that matches the pattern but not the colour. We went with plain brown instead, because the brown is doing more work than the stripe is — it is the only warm colour in the outfit, and it is what stops the whole thing going flat navy. Lose the stripe and you still have the look. Lose the brown and you do not.

One caution: Amazon flags this skirt as a frequently returned item. At $15 it is a low-stakes gamble, but check the size chart properly rather than guessing.

The boots

What is different: colour again, and the stripe. Hers are navy suede with a contrast stripe running up the back of the leg — that is the whole point of the name. These are plain, and we are recommending them in black.

Navy suede knee boots are genuinely hard to find. We filtered Amazon specifically for them and got no results at all. Black is the honest fallback, and it works because the boot and the tights end up in the same family either way. What you must keep is the shape: pointed toe, low heel, shaft finishing just below the knee. A block heel or a round toe changes the outfit completely.

What it costs

Four pieces, $129.30 against $2,250 for three credited items. That is 94.3 per cent less — but be honest with yourself about what you are getting. This is the outfit’s shape, not its detail.

If you want to spend a little more and get closer, the two upgrades worth paying for are navy patterned tights and a navy blazer with patch pockets. Those two changes do more than the other two combined.
