Madonna’s Adidas-and-Dolce Outfit in Milan: Get the Look

Five pieces credited, $8,635, leaving a building in Milan. Everything visible is on the list, which almost never happens on this site.

What is interesting here is not the total, it is the collision. A $5,250 Dolce & Gabbana blazer is worn over a $400 adidas track jacket, above a $275 adidas skirt. Two of the five pieces are sportswear.

That mixing is the whole idea, and it is the reason this outfit is more copyable than the number suggests. You are not recreating luxury; you are recreating a decision.

The skirt

Floor-length, heavily pleated, in a satin that catches light down every fold. And running down one side, three white stripes.

That stripe is the entire joke of the outfit — a sportswear marking on a formal evening skirt. It is what makes the look read as deliberate rather than as a woman in a long black skirt.

What is different: finding a pleated maxi with a genuine side stripe at this price is hard. The honest workaround is to buy a plain pleated satin maxi and add the stripe yourself — iron-on or sewn-on white grosgrain tape costs a few dollars and takes an evening. If you skip it, you lose the one detail that makes the outfit what it is.

The track jacket

This is our favourite alternative on the page, because it is the same brand. The original is an adidas Originals piece from the Willy Chavarria collaboration; the alternative is an ordinary adidas track jacket. Same three stripes, same company, one twentieth of the price.

The collaboration version has a heavier twill fabric and a boxier relaxed cut. The standard jacket is lighter and closer to the body. Under a blazer, worn zipped, that difference largely disappears.

It is worn underneath, and only the collar, chest and cuffs show. Get a black one with the white stripes on the sleeve and you have it.

The blazer

The most expensive item and the biggest saving. Black, structured, with an enormous faux fur collar that swallows the shoulders and frames the whole upper half.

Worth noting: the original is faux fur too. Dolce & Gabbana used a synthetic here, so this is not a case of substituting a cheaper material — it is the same material, differently made.

The collar has to be big. A modest fur trim gives you a completely different, much more ordinary coat. It should sit high behind the neck and spread wide across the chest.

Wear it open. Closed, you lose the track jacket underneath and the layering stops working.

The boots

The Monolith is Prada’s heavy platform boot — a thick lugged sole, a squared toe, and a nylon pouch strapped to the ankle on some versions.

Under a floor-length skirt only the toe and the sole show, which means the sole is what matters. It needs real visible depth. A flat-soled boot vanishes under a hem this long and takes the weight out of the bottom of the outfit.

Black, chunky, laced. The details higher up the boot are invisible here.

The sunglasses

A single curved black shield across the whole face, wrapping to the temples. Worn at night, indoors and out, which tells you what they are for.

The shape does something specific: it removes the eyes entirely, so the face becomes hair, lips and a black bar. Against a big fur collar that reads as very deliberate.

One continuous lens, not two. A pair of large round sunglasses is not the same thing and will not do it.

What it costs

Five pieces, $154.46 against $8,635. That is 98.2 per cent less.

But the more useful figure is this: the two adidas pieces cost $675 of the original total, and we replaced them for $51.59 — including with a real adidas jacket. The sportswear half of this outfit was always the affordable half.

What you are actually copying is a decision anyone can make: put a track jacket under a good coat, and put a sports stripe on an evening skirt. The pieces are ordinary. The combination is not.
