Lady Gaga’s All-Black New York Outfit: Get the Look

The original

$15,560

Our version

$133.96

Four pieces credited, $15,560 — the second most expensive outfit we have priced, and the jacket alone accounts for $9,200 of it. Everything is black. There is no colour, no print and no visible logo anywhere.

Which makes this a useful page, because almost none of that money is buying anything you can see from across a street. What you register is a silhouette: a big shiny jacket over bare leg, sheer socks, and a boot with a sole thick enough to change how she walks.

And three of the pieces holding it together are not on the credit list at all. The hood, the shorts underneath, and the knee-high socks. That last one is the whole styling idea.

Start here, because this is the decision that makes the outfit and it costs eight dollars for six pairs.

A sheer knee-high creates a deliberate break at the knee: bare thigh above, dark leg below, then the boot. That interruption is what stops the bottom half reading as one long black column. Bare legs into boots is ordinary. Opaque tights into boots is warm and safe. This narrow band of sheer is the choice.

Sheer, not opaque. You should be able to see the leg through them. And they need to sit just below the knee — higher and they become stockings, lower and they look like they are falling down.

Nine thousand two hundred dollars, and the entire visual effect is: black, shiny, very oversized, flared at the hem. That flare — the peplum — is the one detail worth trying to match, because it is what gives the jacket its shape when she moves.

What is different: the original is real leather with a structured peplum; this is faux with a straight hem. You lose the flare. What you keep is the volume and the shine, which is most of what reads at a distance.

Buy it deliberately oversized. Hers swamps the shoulder and stops at mid-thigh. A fitted leather jacket in the same colour gives you a completely different, much more conventional outfit.

The Strike is defined by its sole — a deep, aggressively treaded platform that adds serious height without a heel. It changes posture, which is half of why the outfit reads the way it does.

The thing to get right is sole depth. A flat combat boot with the same upper does not do this. You want visible stacking under the foot and a lug tread. Lace-up, ankle height, no buckles or hardware.

Soft, unstructured, black, carried in the crook of the arm rather than on the shoulder. The LV version has hardware and a monogram embossing you will not find at this price — and should not look for, because anything cheap carrying that pattern is counterfeit.

What you can copy is the slouch. A rigid structured bag would fight the jacket; this one collapses in the same way hers does. Plain black, no logo, no chain strap.

Black acetate, squared, worn at night under a hood. Port Tanger frames are handmade in small runs, which is where the price comes from — the shape itself is not unusual.

Keep the lens genuinely dark and the frame chunky. A thin wire frame in the same shape reads as a different decade entirely.

The free part

Two more things in this photograph cost nothing extra and are not credited: a plain black hoodie worn under the jacket with the hood pulled up over the head, and black cycling shorts underneath.

The hood is doing real work. It fills the space between the collar and the sunglasses, and it is why the whole top half reads as one dark mass rather than as a jacket with a head above it. If you own a black hoodie, that part is free.

What it costs

Five pieces, $133.96 against $15,560. That is 99.1 per cent less — the largest gap we have published, by some distance.

It is worth sitting with what that number means. Nothing in this outfit is technically difficult to make. There is no unusual fabric, no print, no colour that is hard to match. The gap is that large precisely because the outfit is simple: when a look is built from shape and styling rather than from craft, the styling is free and the shape is cheap.
