Kim Kardashian’s Archive Galliano Outfit in Paris: Get the Look

The original

$29,150

Our version

$129.95

Three pieces credited, $29,150, in Paris. And one of them is not a garment you can buy.

The dress is an archive piece. John Galliano, Spring/Summer 1995, from the collection he showed under his own name thirty years ago. It has not been in production since. The $27,800 is a resale valuation, not a price on a shelf — there is no shop, at any price, that will sell you that dress.

We are saying this before anything else because it changes what this page can honestly offer. We are not going to pretend a link leads to it. What we can do is break the silhouette into its parts and show you how to build the same shape.

And the shape is the whole thing: enormous pointed shoulders, a waist pulled in hard, a peplum flaring over the hip, then a column skirt to the floor. It is an hourglass drawn with a ruler.

Uncredited, ten dollars, and the only thing in the entire photograph that is not black. Against a high-necked black column, a bright collar at the throat is what stops the outfit reading as a silhouette cut out of paper.

It needs to sit high and close — a collar rather than a pendant on a chain. Hers follows the base of the neck in a continuous line. Something hanging lower would break the vertical the outfit is built on.

The link above goes to John Galliano as a brand, not to this dress. The 1995 piece appears at auction and through specialist archive dealers, occasionally, for five figures. Treat that button as context rather than a shopping route.

What you are copying is the top half of the silhouette. The shoulder is the hardest part and the most important: it is squared off and pushed upward into a point, well beyond where a shoulder naturally sits. Most high-street blazers have soft or lightly padded shoulders and will not do this on their own.

The workaround: buy a structured blazer with the strongest shoulder you can find, then add a separate shoulder pad inside if it is still too soft. That sounds fussy but it is genuinely how the effect is achieved, and pads cost a few dollars.

The waist must be nipped and the hem must flare. A straight-hemmed blazer gives you a completely different outfit.

In the original this is not a separate garment — the dress runs from shoulder to floor in one piece, with the button line continuing down the front. Splitting it in two is our compromise, and it is a real difference: a one-piece has no join at the waist, so the line is unbroken.

You can hide most of that. The blazer’s peplum sits over the top of the skirt and covers the join. Match the blacks as closely as you can — two slightly different blacks under daylight is what will give it away, more than the seam itself.

Full length, narrow, no split. It should reach the floor and nearly cover the shoe.

Barely visible, and that is the point. With a skirt to the floor only the toe shows, so what matters is that the point is sharp and the colour matches the skirt.

Amina Muaddi is known for a flared heel, but on this outfit you cannot see it. This is the one item where the cheap version loses nothing at all.

Small, narrow, black acetate, with a slight lift at the outer corner. Worn with hair pulled up and back, they are the only structure on the face.

Keep them narrow. The whole outfit is about hard, deliberate lines, and a soft or rounded frame fights that.

What it costs

Five pieces, $129.95 against $29,150. That is 99.5 per cent less.

But that percentage is doing something dishonest, so here is the plainer version. The two items you can genuinely buy — the shoes and the sunglasses — cost $1,350 originally and $53.98 here. The dress is not a price, it is an auction estimate for a garment that no longer exists in production.

What you can actually take from this outfit is free: an exaggerated shoulder, a tight waist, a long unbroken column of one colour, and one bright thing at the throat. That combination was designed in 1995 and it still works.
