Justin Bieber’s Baggy Outfit in Tokyo: Get the Look

The original

$2,360

Our version

$98.86

Three pieces credited, $2,360, on a street in Tokyo. A distressed brown knit, black sweatpants wide enough to swallow the shoe, and a heavy lace-up boot underneath.

The whole thing is about volume. The knit is oversized, the trousers are enormous, and the boot is chunky enough to hold the bottom of that silhouette down. Nothing here is fitted, and the outfit only works because of that consistency — one slim piece anywhere and it collapses.

The one thing not on the credit list is the sunglasses, and on a shaved head with no other detail above the waist, they are carrying the entire top of the frame.

Uncredited, fifteen dollars, and the only thing giving the top half of this outfit any shape at all. Shaved head, no hat, no jewellery you can see — take the glasses away and there is nothing to look at above the shoulders.

Small and oval, thin wire frame, with a warm tinted lens rather than a black one. That tint matters: it picks up the brown of the knit and links the two halves of the outfit. A solid black lens would sit there as a dark blank.

They should look slightly too small for the face. That is the point of the shape.

Taupe-brown, loosely knitted, with deliberate holes worked through it. The distressing is the design — without it this is just a jumper.

What is different: the 424 has engineered cutouts placed as a pattern. Cheaper distressed knits have a more random, all-over look. From a distance the effect is the same, because what reads is the texture and the loose gauge rather than where individual holes sit.

Size up. It should hang past the hip and the sleeves should cover half the hand. A distressed knit that actually fits looks like a damaged jumper rather than a designed one.

Black, extremely wide, with a single white stripe running the full length of the outside leg. They pool over the boot and hide it almost completely.

The stripe is doing more work than it looks. On a trouser this wide and this dark, a plain black leg becomes a shapeless mass. The white line gives the eye something vertical to follow and is the reason the silhouette reads as deliberate rather than oversized-by-accident.

Get the width right, and if in doubt go wider. These are closer to a skirt than a jogger in how they hang.

The Strike again — we priced the women’s platform version on the Lady Gaga page. This is the men’s lace-up: same aggressive lug sole, same deliberate heaviness.

Since the trousers cover most of the boot, what actually matters is the sole. It needs visible depth and a deep tread, because that is the only part anyone sees. A flat-soled boot disappears entirely under trousers this wide.

Black, lace-up, no buckles or hardware.

What it costs

Four pieces, $98.86 against $2,360. That is 95.8 per cent less.

What this outfit is actually built from: one texture, one line, and a lot of fabric. The distressed knit gives it surface, the white stripe gives it direction, and everything else is volume. None of those three things is expensive to buy.
