Hailey Bieber’s Black Minidress Outfit in LA: Get the Look

The original

$4,450

Our version

$78.46

Three pieces, all Saint Laurent, all black, $4,450. A strapless minidress, a pointed slingback and a pair of small dark sunglasses. There is no colour, no print and no visible hardware anywhere in the outfit.

Which makes it the purest test of what a designer price actually buys. Strip out the label and what remains is a shape you can find on any high street: a black tube dress, a black pointed heel. The difference is entirely in the cut and the fabric.

So this page is mostly about fit. Get the dress to sit flat across the bust without gaping, and the shoe to be genuinely pointed rather than almond, and you have it. Get either wrong and no amount of spending fixes it.

The Saint Laurent is wool, which is what lets a strapless dress hold its own structure — it stands away from the body slightly at the top rather than clinging. That is the single hardest thing to replicate at any price under a few hundred dollars.

What is different: this is a stretch jersey with ruching at the side. It will hug rather than hold. The honest workaround is the ruching itself — gathered fabric disguises the lack of structure far better than a flat panel would, which is why we picked this over a plainer tube dress.

Reviews on this listing repeatedly mention thin material. Order a size down rather than up: on a strapless dress, slightly tight is what keeps it in place.

The most expensive alternative on the page, and worth it. A slingback lives or dies on the strap: too loose and it slips at the heel with every step, too tight and it cuts. Cheap slingbacks nearly always get this wrong, and this one has an elastic strap, which is the fix.

Take the black satin rather than the patent. Hers are matte, and patent under evening light throws a highlight that changes the shape of the shoe entirely.

The toe matters more than the heel height. Hers are sharply pointed with a long vamp, which is what elongates the leg. An almond toe at the same height does not do the same thing.

Not on the credit list, and the only thing in the entire outfit that reflects light. In a look with no colour, no print and no hardware, a line of stones at the wrist is the whole of the visual interest.

She is also wearing hoop earrings, which are not credited either. Between the two, the jewellery is doing more for this outfit than the sunglasses are — and it costs under eight dollars.

Adjustable is the right call here. Tennis bracelets are usually sold in fixed lengths and a loose one slides over the hand and sits wrong.

Narrow, rectangular, very small. This is a specific 1990s shape and the width is what matters — they should sit inside the width of the face rather than covering it. Anything oversized reads as a completely different decade.

Solid black frame with a dark lens. No tint, no gradient, no metal detailing on the arm.

What it costs

Four pieces, $78.46 against $4,450 for the three credited items. That is 98.2 per cent less, the largest gap on this site.

It is also the outfit where we would spend unevenly rather than evenly. The dress at $13 will look its price up close; the shoes at $44 will not. If you are going to put money anywhere in this look, put it in the shoes — they are on show, they are the piece that has to fit properly, and they are what people actually see when you walk.
