Erling Haaland’s White Shirt Outfit in Sicily: Get the Look

The original

$2,800

Our version

$81.26

Four pieces credited, $2,800, for a white shirt, black shorts and a pair of slides. Haaland was photographed outside a hotel in Sicily wearing what is, structurally, the cheapest kind of outfit there is — and it is the one that copies most cleanly of anything we have priced.

There is a reason. Nothing here has a print, a cut you would struggle to find, or a fabric only one mill makes. It is a camp-collar shirt worn loose, elastic-waist shorts, and slides. The money bought quality of cloth and a designer name, not a shape you cannot buy elsewhere.

The one thing holding it together is proportion. The shirt is oversized and untucked, sitting well past the waistband, and the shorts stop above the knee. That contrast — long top, short bottom — is what makes it read as deliberate rather than as someone who got dressed in the dark.

Not on the credit list and doing more work than its price suggests. Worn backwards, a white cap does two things: it keeps the top of the outfit the same colour as the shirt, and it stops the whole thing looking like resort uniform.

Get a soft unstructured one rather than a stiff five-panel. His has no visible logo and sits low. A structured cap with a firm front panel will not fold the same way when reversed.

A camp collar — the flat, open, one-piece collar with no stand behind it — is the detail that separates this from an ordinary shirt. It sits open at the neck without needing a button undone, which is why it works with nothing underneath.

Buy it a size up. His is noticeably oversized through the body and shoulder, and a fitted linen shirt in the same colour reads as office wear. Linen or a cotton-linen blend matters too: pure cotton holds a crease differently and loses the soft drape.

Plain black, elastic waist, finishing a few inches above the knee. There is genuinely nothing else to them, which is the point — they are the quiet half of the outfit and the reason the shirt can be as large as it is.

Watch the length. Too long and the proportion inverts and you lose the whole effect. Mid-thigh to just above the knee is the range.

Pick the cream colourway, not the chocolate shown on the listing. The beige is what ties the slides to the white shirt and keeps the bottom of the outfit light. A dark slide cuts the leg line and makes the shorts look longer than they are.

His are flat calfskin with a logo plate; these are a moulded cushion sole, which is a chunkier look. From a distance the silhouette reads the same — single wide band, open toe, no straps. Up close they are a different shoe, and we would rather say so.

Small, oval, dark lens, thin acetate frame. The size is the thing to get right: these are deliberately narrow, closer to a 1990s frame than the oversized shapes that have dominated recently.

Two warnings. Take the black colourway rather than the tortoise shown first — his are solid dark. And Amazon flags this listing as a frequently returned item, which usually means sizing runs small on the face. At $16 it is a low-stakes gamble, but worth knowing.

What it costs

Five pieces, $81.26 against $2,800 for the four credited items. That is 97.1 per cent less, and it is the largest gap we have run on a men’s look.

The reason is worth stating plainly: this outfit has no logo you can see, no print, and no unusual cut. When a designer charges $750 for plain black shorts, almost all of what you are paying for is the label inside them.
