Eminem’s All-Black MTV Awards Outfit: Get the Look

The original

$1,630

Our version

$334.10

Three pieces credited, $1,630. It is the smallest gap we have run, and the reason is that two of the three are already priced where normal people shop — a $110 pair of cargos and a $220 sneaker. Only the jacket is doing the heavy lifting on that number.

This is also the outfit where we are telling you to buy one thing at full price. More on that under the shoes.

Everything here is black, and the whole outfit turns on two things that are not on the credit list: a Detroit Tigers cap and a lot of silver. Take those away and you have a man in black cargos.

The real thing

Not on the credit list, and the most recognisable object in the photograph. Eminem has worn a Detroit D for twenty-five years; it is closer to a signature than an accessory.

This is the same cap from the same brand, so there is no dupe involved. Black-on-black means the D is embroidered in the same colour as the crown — it reads as texture, not as a logo, which is why it works in an outfit with no other colour. A white-logo version would pull every eye to his head.

One difference worth knowing: his has a curved brim, this is the flat-brim 9FIFTY. If you want the curve, look for a 39THIRTY or a 9TWENTY in the same black-on-black Tigers colourway.

What is different: the finish. The Philipp Plein is a high-shine coated nylon with a camo print worked into it — under stage lighting it reads almost wet. This is matte.

We searched several ways for a glossy hooded jacket and Amazon only offers two things: matte technical windbreakers, or high-shine bombers and puffers sold as party costumes. Neither gives you both. We took the silhouette, because a hooded windbreaker worn open over a long tee is the shape that reads from a distance, and a shiny bomber would read as fancy dress.

Wear it open and unzipped. Zipped up it becomes a rain jacket and the outfit disappears.

The Rovic is a genuinely well-known trouser — tapered through the leg, zip pockets on the thigh, a slight drop through the seat. At $110 it is already close to reachable, so the saving here is the smallest on the page.

What matters in the copy is the taper. His narrow noticeably below the knee and stack over the shoe rather than hanging straight. A loose military cargo gives you a completely different, much heavier silhouette.

The piece nobody listed

Price checked 1 September 2026

The second uncredited piece, and the only thing in the frame that catches light. A long silver chain with a dog tag sitting mid-chest, plus a bracelet and a ring. In an outfit this uniformly black, that metal is the entire visual interest.

His pendant is pave-set and throws a lot of light; this is polished steel, which is quieter. If you want the sparkle, look for an iced dog tag in the same search — but the plain version ages better and will not go green.

Length matters more than finish. It needs to sit on the chest over the t-shirt, not at the collar.

The shoes

This is the one piece on this site we are telling you to buy real.

The Air Jordan 4 is among the most copied silhouettes in footwear, and it is also among the most protected. Nike pursues lookalikes hard, the fakes are obvious to anyone who knows the shoe, and the visible details — the wing eyelets, the mesh panels, the moulded heel — are exactly what cheap versions get wrong.

At $220 the White Thunder is also not far off what people spend on sneakers anyway. Against a $19.97 jacket and a $12.99 chain, it is the item worth putting the money into.

If $220 is not happening, do not buy a copy. Wear a plain black sneaker with a white midsole instead and let the rest of the outfit do the work. That is a different shoe honestly worn, rather than a bad version of this one.

What it costs

Four pieces plus the real sneakers: $334.10 against $1,630. That is 79.5 per cent less — by far the narrowest gap on this site, and deliberately so, because one of the five is bought at full price.

Strip out the shoes and the clothes come to $114.10 against $1,410. The lesson is the same one the all-black outfits keep teaching: with no colour and no logos, the only things carrying the look are fit and metal.
