David Beckham was at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami for Argentina against Cape Verde, wearing a Tudor Black Bay Chrono 39 in the yellow dial everyone calls the Bumblebee.
One thing to say straight away: Beckham has been a paid Tudor ambassador since 2017. He is not a customer who happened to buy this. That does not make the watch less interesting, but you should know it when you see a photograph like this one.
It is also, by a distance, the most reachable watch we have covered. Ronaldo’s Patek was $720,000. This is a five-figure steel chronograph, and that difference is the whole point of Tudor.
What it is
A 39mm steel chronograph — a stopwatch built into a watch — with a domed yellow dial, black sub-counters and a date at six. The bezel is fixed steel with a black aluminium tachymeter insert, the scale used for calculating speed over a measured distance.
Inside is Tudor’s own Calibre MT5813, chronometer-certified, with a 70-hour power reserve. That means you can take it off on Friday evening and it will still be running on Monday morning. Water resistant to 200 metres, on a rivetless three-link bracelet with a micro-adjustment clasp.
The yellow is what people react to. Tudor calls it racing yellow; the black subdials against it are what earned the Bumblebee nickname. On the wrist it is much louder than a photograph suggests.
Tudor and Rolex
This is the part most coverage skips, and it explains everything about the watch.
Tudor was founded by Hans Wilsdorf — the man who founded Rolex. He registered the name in 1926 and built the brand in 1946 with a specific purpose: to make watches with Rolex’s cases and bracelets and reliability, at a price ordinary people could pay. Early Tudors used Rolex Oyster cases with bought-in movements.
The two are still owned by the same parent. Tudor now makes its own movements in-house, which is the reason a watch like this can be chronometer-certified with a 70-hour reserve at a fraction of a Rolex price.
So when people say Tudor is the affordable Rolex, they are closer to literally correct than they usually realise. It is not an imitation of Rolex; it is Rolex’s own answer to the question of what a cheaper Rolex would be.
What it actually costs
Retail is roughly half the figure above. A steel Black Bay Chrono lists in the region of six thousand dollars. The $10,500 is what the yellow dial has been trading at.
That gap is new for Tudor, and it is interesting. For most of its history the brand was the sensible choice you could walk in and buy. The Bumblebee has done something Tudors have not usually done — attracted the queue-and-premium behaviour that used to belong to Rolex alone.
Which means the practical advice here is different from our other watch pages. If you want this watch, ask an authorised dealer first. Unlike a Nautilus or a gem-set Daytona, a Tudor is a watch you can plausibly be sold at list price. Paying a market premium should be the fallback, not the plan.
And if the yellow is the only thing stopping you, the same chronograph exists in other dials at retail with no waiting.
Where to find one
The usual position. Tudor is counterfeited like every Swiss brand, and the Black Bay is among the most copied designs because the case shape is shared across dozens of references. Buy from an authorised dealer or a seller that authenticates.
The advantage here is that authorised dealers actually exist for you. That has not been true of anything else in this section.
Worth saying
We priced a full Beckham outfit on this page if you want the rest of what he wears.
Across this section we have covered a $720,000 Patek, a $180,000 Daytona and a twenty-five-piece Hublot that almost nobody can buy.
This is the first one where the honest answer to “could I own that?” is yes, if you save for it. That is worth a page on its own.
