Conor McGregor’s Green Fleece Outfit in Dublin: Get the Look

The original

$2,230

Our version

$124.96

Three pieces credited, $2,230, and the most expensive item is a pair of boots you cannot see in the photograph. What you can see is a green fleece, blue jeans and a flat cap — which is to say, a man in Dublin dressed for a cold afternoon.

That is what makes it worth pricing. There is no tailoring here, no print, no logo doing the work. The whole thing turns on one bright colour against plain denim, and on a hat that costs fifteen dollars.

Worth being straight about one thing before we start: the Dior boots are cut off below the frame, so we are working from the credit list rather than from the photograph on that one item.

Not on the credit list, and the thing most people would recognise first. McGregor in a flat cap in Dublin is close to a costume he has worn for a decade, and it is the single cheapest item here.

One difference: his is a fairly plain wool in sage-grey; this is a tweed with visible flecking. If you want the plainer version, look for a solid wool flat cap rather than a tweed — but the eight-panel construction is right, and that is what gives the cap its rounded crown rather than the flatter, harder shape of a cheap one.

Size it properly. A flat cap that is too big sits on the ears and looks borrowed.

High-pile fleece — the deep, shaggy kind rather than the flat brushed sort — in a green bright enough to be the only colour in the frame. That texture is most of the effect: it catches light, gives the shoulders bulk, and reads as expensive even at a distance.

What is different: his is a full zip, this is a quarter zip with a mock neck. In the photograph the zip is done up to the chin anyway, so the two look near identical as worn. If you want the exact construction, search for a full-zip high-pile fleece in the same colour; expect to pay a little more.

Get the green right. Army or olive, not lime and not forest. Too bright and it reads as outdoor gear; too dark and you lose the contrast against the denim that makes this outfit work.

Mid-blue, slim through the leg, no rips and very little fading. They are deliberately the quiet part of the outfit — the fleece is loud enough that anything patterned or distressed below it would fight.

We have gone with a real brand here rather than an unbranded alternative. At $30, GAP’s slim fit gets you consistent sizing and a denim weight that holds its shape, which matters more on a plain jean than on almost anything else. There is nowhere for a bad cut to hide.

The largest single saving on the page, and the item we can say least about, because the boots are not visible in the photograph. What follows is about the shoe as credited rather than as worn.

A Chelsea boot is defined by two things: elastic side panels and no laces. Beyond that, what separates a good one from a bad one is the shape of the toe and the height of the heel. Keep the toe rounded rather than sharply pointed and the heel low. A pointed Chelsea with a stacked heel goes somewhere very different.

Black leather, plain, no buckle or strap. With jeans this simple, the boot should disappear.

What it costs

Four pieces, $124.96 against $2,230 for the three credited items. That is 94.4 per cent less.

The thing this outfit demonstrates: one saturated colour, worn against something plain, does more than any amount of money spent on the plain half. The fleece is the outfit. The jeans and boots are there to stay out of its way.
