Beyonce’s Yellow Satin Outfit at Glamour WOTY: Get the Look

The original

$2,595

Our version

$139.55

Three pieces credited, $2,595. And the credit list covers roughly a third of what is actually in this photograph.

Not on it: the camel coat with the fur collar, the long nude gloves, the clutch, the gold platform sandals, and a gold clasp at the waist. The coat alone is the largest object in the frame — it takes up more of the picture than the dress does — and nobody listed it.

So this is the page where the uncredited half is genuinely the outfit. What is credited is a yellow t-shirt and a yellow skirt. What makes it a look is everything draped, pulled and layered on top of them.

The most expensive item on our list and the only one over fifty dollars, because this is the piece doing the work. Camel, full length, worn over the shoulders rather than through the sleeves, with a big pale fur collar.

Two things matter. The colour has to be warm camel, not beige and not grey-taupe. It sits directly against a yellow dress, and a cool-toned neutral makes the yellow look sickly rather than rich.

And it must be worn open and off the shoulders. Put your arms through the sleeves and this becomes a woman in a coat. Draped, it frames the yellow and creates the whole silhouette.

On the fur: hers reads as real. The alternative is faux, which we would pick regardless — at this scale nobody can tell from a photograph, and a pale faux collar does the same job of lightening the neckline.

Floor-length, liquid yellow satin, cut close through the hip and flaring below the knee. The shine is the point — under night lighting it catches every light source in the street, which is exactly what you can see happening in the photograph.

What is different: hers is silk, this is polyester satin. Silk falls heavier and moves more slowly; polyester is shinier and lighter. In still images that difference is small. In video it is more noticeable, because polyester swings faster.

Get the yellow right and everything else follows: a warm butter-gold, not lemon and not mustard.

A plain fitted yellow t-shirt. Five hundred and seventy-five dollars, because it is cotton blended with cashmere, which makes it softer and heavier than a cotton tee and gives it a slight matte glow next to the satin.

What you need is the colour match and the fit. It must be the same yellow family as the skirt — slightly different tones read as a mistake rather than a deliberate tonal outfit — and it must be close-fitting, because the volume in this look comes entirely from the coat.

Seven dollars, uncredited, and doing something specific: they extend the arm in the same tone as the skin, so the eye reads one continuous line from shoulder to clutch rather than an arm ending at a wrist.

Nude or pale beige rather than white or black. The point is that they nearly disappear.

Rounded, thin gold metal frame, warm brown-amber lens. Worn indoors at night, which tells you they are there for the look rather than the sun.

The tint matters more than the shape. A brown or amber lens keeps the whole face in the same warm register as the camel and gold. A grey or black lens would put a cold hole in the middle of it.

What it costs

Five pieces, $139.55 against $2,595. That is 94.6 per cent less.

But the more useful number is this one: two of our five items — the coat and the gloves, $77.58 between them — are not on the credit list at all. They cost more than the two credited garments we replaced.

That is the argument this page makes. A yellow t-shirt and a yellow skirt is an outfit anyone owns. What turned it into this was a camel coat hung off the shoulders and a pair of seven-dollar gloves.
