Beyoncé Outfit for Her Birthday in London: Roberto Cavalli and Jimmy Choo
The original
$15,420
Our version
$115.96
Five pieces credited, $15,420, out for her birthday in London. It is Beyoncé’s second appearance here, after her yellow satin and camel coat.
A sheer brown blouse woven with gold, a fringed mini skirt, burgundy heels, small tinted sunglasses and a gold clutch. And the most expensive thing in the photograph is the smallest: the clutch is $8,500 — more than the blouse and skirt together.

Credited as two pieces — the shirt at $3,000 and the skirt at $2,400 — but worn as one: a long sheer shirt tied at the waist, with a line of gold fringe showing at the hem.
The fabric is fil coupé, French for “cut thread”. Extra yarns are woven into a sheer base and then cut away between the motifs, leaving patterns that float on the fabric. Here they are metallic gold and pink on brown chiffon, which is why it catches the flash so hard.
Our version is honest about what it can and cannot do. A sheer patterned blouse gives you the shape and the see-through layer; it will not have the metallic weave. And since the skirt is almost entirely hidden under the shirt, the part you actually see is the gold fringe — so we have linked a brown sequin mini skirt with a fringed hem that does exactly that.

A small gold clutch made to look like metal lace, with a flower on the clasp.
Eight thousand five hundred dollars — 55 per cent of the outfit. A sculpted metal clutch is closer to jewellery than to a bag, and that is how it is priced. It carries no logo; what you are paying for is the metalwork.
A small, hard, gold evening bag gives you the same glint in the hand. Keep it small — it should look like an object, not a bag.
The heels

Deep burgundy, pointed, on a thin high heel.
One thing we will not link: a red sole. Louboutin’s red lacquered sole is a registered trademark, and a shoe that copies it is a counterfeit, not a dupe. What we have linked is a classic pointed pump with an ordinary sole — the shape of a Pigalle, without borrowing the one thing that makes it a Louboutin.
Choose burgundy or oxblood, a closed back and a slim heel.
The sunglasses

Jimmy Choo

Small, narrow and tinted cranberry red — a very 1990s shape that has come back in the last few years. They pick up the burgundy of the heels at the other end of the outfit.
What it costs
Five pieces, $115.96 against $15,420. That is 99.2 per cent less.
And the honest summary is about where the money went. Over half of it is a clutch the size of a hand, and a good share of the rest is the metallic weave in the blouse. The outfit itself — brown, gold and burgundy, sheer on top, a flash of fringe — is a colour idea, and colour ideas are free to copy.
